Hurumanu - Wind Power


Measuring weather.

Definitions:

  1.  Anemometer: A anemometer is an instrument for measuring the speed of the wind or any current of gas.
  2. Beaufort wind scale: It is an empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land.
  3. Typhoon: A typhoon is an intense storm of a tropical origin.
  4. Monsoon: A monsoon is seasonally direct winds that are common in eastern and southern Asia.
  5. What is it when the weather is really nice and turns to hail called:

AnemometerMATERIALS

  1. Two sticks  
  2. 4 cups  
  3.   Pencil
  4.   Pin
  5.   Sellotape
  6. Sticky note
  7. Scissors

STEPS

  1.   Get all of your materials from the teacher
  2.   Tape the two sticks together forming an x
  3.   Tape the 4 cups to the end of the sticks
  4.   Put the pin into the tape that is in the middle of the two sticks
  5.   Push the pencil into the pin/ Make sure that your pencil has a rubber on the end of it
  6.   Put your sticky note onto one of the cups and write your name on it.

Roles:
  • Timekeeper
  • Counter
  • Recorder
  • Anemometer Manager
  • Wind Manager
  1. Mount the anemometer in a place that has full access to the wind from all directions.
  2. When the timekeeper says "Go", the counter in each group will count how many times the marked cup passes them in one minute and write it down.
  3. Repeat the above step four (4) times and record the number of spins on the chart.

FINDINGS

  • Record how many times it spins and record it in the table below.
  • You will need to time them and count the number of spins.
